PIR vs Armaflex — when to choose which?
PIR wins on € per R for large, flat areas (walls/ceiling). Armaflex is lighter and easier on curves, ribs and doors, and helps with condensation control. Most good builds mix both.
How do I set realistic R-value targets?
Use higher targets for **cold** climates and where you can spare thickness (ceiling first). In mixed climates, aim moderate for walls and a bit higher for the ceiling. Floors benefit from XPS even at modest thickness.
Is wool OK in vans?
Mineral/sheep wool can work in **closed cavities** if kept dry and well-contained. It’s cheap per R but heavier than foams and needs careful moisture management. Avoid loose contact with condensation-prone steel.
What if my thickness limits are tight?
Prioritise **ceiling**, then **walls**. Use higher-performance materials (PIR/Armaflex) and tackle thermal bridges (ribs, frames) to get more comfort from less thickness.
Do I need a vapour barrier?
Treat moisture paths, seams and openings rather than relying on a single film. Good sealing, proper adhesives/tapes, and ventilation strategy matter more than a perfect, continuous barrier in a complex van shell.
