Vanlife With a Baby: Our First Month on the Road
From DIY van build to baby naps on wheels — our first month living, learning, and laughing our way through vanlife as new parents.
Is vanlife safe for a baby?
Yes — if you plan properly. Use an approved baby car seat, secure all furniture, and make sure there’s proper ventilation and shade. We treat driving time as travel time — everyone buckled up, no exceptions.
What baby essentials do you actually need for vanlife?
Less than you think. Our must-haves: travel high chair, foldable play mat, portable white-noise, sunshade, and a solid supply of diapers and wipes. Everything else — optional or overrated.
How do you handle feeding and baby food in a van?
We keep it simple — purees, fruits, and easy-to-rinse bowls. We also use Beaba Babycook Neo for steaming, but sometimes we also use store bought purees.
How do you stay sane as new parents in such a small space?
By lowering expectations and raising humor levels. There’s no “perfect day.” Some are just about surviving, others feel magical. The trick is to laugh, adapt, and remember why you started.
How do you manage a baby’s sleep routine while traveling?
You don’t — at least not perfectly. It takes time for babies to adjust, but a familiar bedtime setup (same sleep sack, sound, and light level) helps a lot. Most importantly — make sure your baby gets quality rest not only in the car seat, but also in a safe, flat sleeping space. We plan our drives around naps, but prioritize real sleep in the van bed or travel cot whenever possible.
When is the right time to start vanlife with a baby?
There’s no “perfect time.” If you keep waiting for all conditions to align, you’ll probably be waiting forever. If the conversion is ready, the bed is safe, and your mindset is “we’ll figure it out” — that’s enough. Just go.
